  Background and aims: One of the best ways to increase productivity is to select competence personnel. A typical approach in the field of personnel selection is to increase the emphasis on personnel characteristics especially cognitive ability. The spreading use of technology have transformed the nature of work in most occupations especially computer software engineering which considered as the fastest- growing jobs. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between cognitive ability and demographic characteristics of computer software engineers.

  Methods: This study was a cross-sectional, descriptive-analytic study. Computer software engineers of Tehran with a simple random sampling were included in this study.

  Results: The results showed that cognitive ability was significantly related to the age, educational level and job experience but, no significant relationship wasobsereved between gender, marital status and cognitive ability.

  Conclusion: Once organizations understand the role of critical thinking in everyday decision-making, they can begin to take steps to develop that skill in their employees and as a result the productivity of organization will be increased significantly.
